DESCRIPTION:Wandering Minyan/Kol Halev Simchat Torah Celebration\nWe will pray the maariv evening service\, and then have a special Torah service preceded by 7 circuits of dancing and singing with the Torah (called hakafot). During the Torah service itself (the only time we read the Torah in the evening)\, we will read the end of Deuteronomy\, and then take a guided tour through the Torah back to the beginning\, where we will read the first seven days of creation. It will be set up so everyone present will have an opportunity to have an aliyah (saying the blessings over the Torah reading). We will also honor two special Wandering Minyan community members with special aliyot for their dedication and work towards this community. Please join us in celebrating Torah and community\, and bring your singing voice\, dancing shoes\, and a little nosh to share!  RSVP

DESCRIPTION:Tisha B’Av (the 9th day of Hebrew month of Av) is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar\, marking the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile that followed. This year\, Tisha B’Av falls amidst a modern-day crisis: asylum seekers denied refuge and kept in unthinkable conditions\, families separated and children locked in cages\, and immigrant communities under perpetual threat of deportation. Join us—along with dozens of communities across the country—as we share stories\, sing lamentations\, stand with those impacted\, and call for a new vision of healing and justice. Together\, we will demonstrate that we will not turn our backs on our immigrant neighbors. We welcome people of all faith traditions to this community-wide event. \nThis event is hosted by Congregation Agudas Achim\, Austin. Co-sponsors include: NCJW (National Council of Jewish Women) Austin; Congregation Beth Israel; and Austin Jews for Justice. \n*What is Tisha B’Av?*\nTisha B’Av commemorates the destruction of the Temple\, as well as many other catastrophes throughout Jewish history. While many other Jewish holidays focus on our joy at our survival\, Tisha B’Av asks us to confront and mourn the continued brokenness of the world. Many Jews observe this though fasting\, reading the biblical Book of Lamentations\, and reaffirming our commitment to repairing the world. \n*What to expect*\nWe will gather to read passages from the book of Lamentations alongside testimonies from those impacted by the U.S. immigration system. DESCRIPTION:Plans are afoot to do some group Tikkun Olam (‘Repair of the World’) Volunteering at the Community First! Village. Rabbi Lev and several other CKH members had a tour there\, and loved what we saw. Perhaps a good next step would be for more of us to learn more about this innovative village that provides homes for the homeless. \nSaturday\, June 29 is the Public Premiere of a new documentary about the village. The name of the documentary is “Community First\, A Home for the Homeless”. It is being shown at the Village in their outdoor amphitheater\, and it will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Layton Blaylock. The film is free but they say that a $5 donation would be much appreciated. Sign up for tickets \nBring lawn chairs\, bug spray and dress for summer heat.  There’s a concession stand that sells burgers\, fries\, snacks and drinks.  It’d be great to get there by 6:30 or 7:00 to have time to park\, put down chairs and wander around a bit to explore that amazing place.

Zalman first leads us on his journey from his home town Keidaniai in Lithuania to Jerusalem\, where he arrived over 200 years ago. He then reveals the role of his dynasty in Israel in the years to come. \nThe program combines new and old film footage\, shot in Europe and in Israel.
